Even Giulio Jasolino (1549-1639) remarked, Calabrian doctor at the court of Naples in his seminal text “De Rimedi naturali” that are now known on the island of Ischia Pithecusa describing the populations of the island: in Barano people amuse greatly to dance”. He was referring to the “Ndrezzata”, the ancient dance of Greek origin, which is kept in Buonopane, a small village in the municipality of Barano located about three hundred meters above sea level.
The impressive mosaic ceramic - twenty meters long by artist Nello Di Leva - dominates the square of San Giovanni Battista in Buonopane. The ceramic mosaic was placed in 2011 on the initiative of the municipal administration headed by Mayor Paolino Buono with meaningful images and tells the old story of Barano and above depicts the “Ndrezzata”, the oldest island dance whose origins are still shrouded in mystery and are lost in the mists of time because it is impossible to find an explanation to the “preach of the corporal”, which you can read on the mosaic.
“The preaching of Corporal” is the original story narrated by the ringleader to explain this dance of love and war which involves eighteen dancers "weavers", four players, two clarinets and two drums that give rhythm. This traditional band is reserved only for citizens of Buonopane who participate in transmitting the art and privilege from father to son, from generation to generation for centuries.
